UrbanBaby 1.5 redesign goes live

Update (May 10, 2008):
Imagine my surprise to see a flood of comments on a single post today. And such lovely comments they are. If only these commenters had paid attention to the date of the original fucking post.

Attention all you infuriated but obviously not very observant people: I am not the current art director for UrbanBaby and the new redesign launched in May 2008 has nothing to do with me.

This was my redesign (over a year ago, in 2007):

This is the new design (not by me):

So, if you hate the new design, not my problem. If you want to offer the folks at UrbanBaby some constructive feedback, I'm sure they'd like to hear it. Constructive.

Original post (February 20, 2007):
UrbanBaby is one of the three sites for which I'm the art director.

We've been working on a redesign for a while and it launched today, but at present it has only resurfaced three pagetypes: the homepage, the local landing pages, and the registration page. Contrast those with the old site design to get an idea of just how outdated this property looked before.

I'm pretty happy with it so far, although there are some significant problems with the CSS not matching the mockups I provided. At least, they're serious to me and anyone aesthetically astute enough to notice them.

The redesign SUCKS. (and I'm a graphic designer. ) it's sad because you obviously didn't take the time to see what made the website unique and user-friendly.

Have you seen the reaction your site has gotten? Everyone is heartbroken. No thought whatsoever to what made ub so special as a community. It's rotten work. Get a clue!

Please fix all the issues with the site. You are ruining one of the greatest resources for moms - instanteous chat about anything and everything important to them. Please focus on functionality versus the "look".

Are you serious? It is such an awful redesign. The chat is virtually unusable, all the beloved functionality is gone.

You have ruined the site, but have given me my life back. So, thank you?

It is the end of an era.

Why not get on the site and defend your design decisions? Maybe you have information we don't understand yet. Lots of women are interested in talking with you.

The new site is terrible and many are leaving due to the change. Awful work you did.

the redesign really SUCKS! you are probably a man. You're lack of thoughtful interpretation to what MADE UB attractive, now makes UB not a cite I will visit anymore....

You need to reevaluate this redesign.

wow, sorry but your design sucks. Did you do any user testing before it was launched? Did you bother to ask why people liked the old site? This one looks like a tech chat room that gets one message a day. UB is doomed because of this. Good job.

You have thousands of users furious.

The redesign has made the site much worse, because functionality has been lost AND it's harder to see and have conversations, which is the whole point of it. I cannot imagine why you're happy with it -- and if you check out the site you'll see that very few of the users are happy now.

If you monitor the site, you'll see that virtually no one likes the "improvements." Much of the old functionality is gone, and even the layout makes it harder to see the conversations -- you end up with more posts, but fewer interactions, which was what the site was all about.

Look at the date of the post, people. Hell, look at the content. This guy worked on a completely different redesign more than a year ago.

You obviously have very little clue to how to utilize form for function. Your web design is brash, counter-intuitive and such a strain on the eyes that it defeats the very purpose of the site's existence.

I wouldn't be so quick to put this one in the portfolio.

It is so, so, so obvious that you never used the old site, and consequently had not understanding of or appreciation for what people loved about it.

This is terrible, please chance back before you lose everybody. Someone is going to create another site like the old one, and people will go to it. Listen to this feedback, that people are actually upset enough about this to post should tell you something.

This just shows that once one of your sites goes live, everyone will always expect you to be in control of it (and blame you for anything wrong with it). I still having people telling me stuff about sites I designed 5+ years ago for a former company - so aggravating.

GET A CLUE PEOPLE!
