The iGoods

So, my two predictions proved to be true (I'd surmised that we'd see iWorks and a Flash-based iPod, based on the industry scuttle and trademark applications I've been hearing about for the past two months), but Apple surprised even me by coming through with the rumored miniMac, actually dubbed the Mac Mini.

The new iPod Shuffle is actually cooler than I had envisioned. And although Notes (part of iWork) looks very cool (but I reserve final judgement until I've demoed it), I'm surprised there are only two apps in the first rev of this suite. I presume, though, that we'll be seeing additions to the suite in the next two years.

The miniMac "surprised even you"? It was pretty much confirmed when Apple sued ThinkSecret for posting about the headless iMac.

What surprised me was how close the "iHome" fakery was to looking like the real deal (only, you know, the real one isn't made out of construction paper):

I'd trade my noisy-ass G4 tower for one in a second if it weren't University property.

iPod shuffle actually looks pretty cool to me. My collection is too big for even the beefiest iPod to hold it all, and while the iPod interface beats the other mp3 players I've used, it sucks bigtime compared to iTunes. Give me good iTunes integration, Smart Playlists, and the ability to play high bitrate AACs and Apple Lossless and 512MB is all I'll ever need in a player.

I should clarify. It surprised me mainly because I didn't think Apple would introduce two or more hardware products, and it looked like they might introduce the so-called break-out box for Garage Band, and then top if all off with the Flash iPod.

I was betting on two large software products, one significant hardware product (iPod), one smaller one (the break-out box; and I say "small" only because the market for it would be small), and a slew of software upgrade announcements and/or ship date announcements (i.e. the date for Tiger).

So, they impressed me by announcing so much. I guess I shouldn't have been that surprised, though, considering the scuttlebutt on the quarterlies and the apparently stellar number of iPods sold in December (something like six million+ in the last quarter).

Oh my darling, I love you. But you're *so* full of shit.

"(14:53:13) mark: I thought they'd don one software thing and one hardware thing, and I discounted the rumors about a flat iMac with no screen, since they'll want to get rid of the rest of the iMac G5s before they introduce another one
(14:53:37) fwegan: i wasn't aware those were rumors
(14:53:47) mark: did you hear the rumors about the flat iMac? Supposedly $499. No screen, so you can buy an expensive flat=panel or you can buy a cheap CRT.
(14:53:56) fwegan: yeah
(14:54:04) fwegan: i meant, i thought they were true
(14:54:11) fwegan: didn't know it was "rumor" status
(14:54:11) mark: no, rumors"

Oh, and as long as I'm going through my Adium logs, I'd just like to share this bit of filth:

"(14:39:35) mark: well then you should just screw people you love but aren't going to fall in love with.
(14:39:38) mark: Like your brother"

I truly didn't think they'd introduce two or more significant hardware products. Like I said, I thought we'd see a new iPod (significant) and the break-out box (not significant) plus lots of software.

Now go fuck your brother. I'll leave it up to you which one to choose.

No dude, I'm still calling your bull. You made me feel stupid for thinking that what you said were rumors were true, even thought they were true, and now you're saying you were only surprised because of the 2 hardware thing, but I think you're surprised because you thought it was all rumors. Which they weren't. Whoah. Maybe I really do need this lame English class...
