Joss Whedon on Humanism The popular writer and director of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” fame recently received the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism, previously awarded to people such as writer Salman Rushdie and Greg Graffin of the punk band Bad Religion. The above five-minute snippet comes from his speech which was broadcast on the Cambridge Forum, but sadly their web presence is ridiculously antiquated (they offer cassettes of their programs, so that should give you an idea). A good article on the event (with pictures) is available from the Harvard Humanist(s): Joss Whedon Slays Sold-Out Crowd.
What’s in your box of Kleenex? Greenpeace offers a paper towel, napkin, tissue, and toilet paper buying guide that rates brands and gives data on post-consumer recycled content, overall recycled content, and whether chlorine is used to bleach the pulp. View it online, or download and print. They also have an iPhone app so you can look brands up while shopping.
Yuto Miyazawa plays “Crazy Train” on Ellen Okay, so maybe his pronunciation of the English lyrics is not so impressive, but his guitar playing is pretty good for an nine-year old. Watch for the surprise ending. [5:59 min]
Jake and Amir Okay, I admit it: I can’t help laughing at Jake and Amir. One of my favorite internet shows.
Little Red Riding Hood reinterpreted In a very cool infographic style.

“Jesus Is My Friend” This is certainly the peppiest Christian rock song ever recorded. But they should know by now that rock ’n’ roll is always perverted by the influence of the devil. Hence the lyric: “Once I tried to run / I tried to run and hide / Jesus came and found me and he touched me down inside...” 8-\ [via Jason]
The Reverse Graffiti Project Reverse graffiti artist Paul Curtis: “I make pictures by cleaning. I am a professor of dirt.” More info on the project.
The largest record collection in the world I bought a bunch of vinyl records and singles this year to add to my collection. Some people think my collecting is crazy. But my collection is nothing compared to Paul Mawhinney’s.
Roger Horrocks A photojournalist specializing in environmental and underwater photography. Some stellar underwater shots on his site.

Thursday Top 5
The Pixar Story I hadn't heard about this documentary, and now I'm looking forward to it. Unfortunately, there's no trailer on the site yet (boo!), even though the film's been screening around the country for months. Meantime, I quenched my thirst by reading this column from a couple years ago, about Pixar's 10th birthday. www.thepixarstory.com
Harmonica + Beatbox: Final Cut I think I posted a video of this guy, Yuri Lane, a couple years ago. Amazing skillz. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHUuqsSCn5g
20/20: "Stupid in America" Oh man, it gets worse. The whole Miss Teen South Carolina thing led me to this "20/20" episode. It takes about ten minutes before you see some hope: Some of the alternative schools, where teaching actually happens (shocking!). Oh bog, this makes me want to vote Libertarian again. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfRUMmTs0ZA
Voice of Bart Simpson gives $10 million to Scientology I don't know what's more appalling, that she gave that much dough to the lunatic cult, or that she earns $250,000 for every episode of "The Simpsons." www.pagesix.com
